Les Amis is ideally placed to explore the Loire valley, with its unique chateaux and vineyards, motor museum and a well renowned zoo etc. Walking and cycling through forest trails, local fishing and wine tasting are most enjoyable past-times here.
A five minute drive will bring you to the busy little town of Chabris which has a large supermarket and fuel station. It also has a variety of shops including restaurants, hair dressers, newsagents, bank and of course traditional French bakeries. If you want to cool off in the river there is a beach here and canoes can be hired for river trips. For the more energetic there are tennis courts and equestrian activities. An excellent typical French market town is Selles sur Cher which is easily reached by a pleasant car journey of about 15 minutes. Market day is Thursday. There are a couple of pavement bars where you can take a drink, rest for a while and absorb the atmosphere, as well as restaurants and a variety of shops, a small chateau and an impressive church.
There are many interesting towns and villages around the area, the nearest large town being Romorantin which is about a 20 minute drive away. It is an old Roman town with medieval buildings and unique shops. Just out of town are several shopping complexes, including a very large E.Leclerc superstore.
Five miles south-west of Menetou Sur Nahon is the magnificent chateau of Valencay. There is a
delightful swimming lake with beach and children’s play area at Villentrois, which is about a 20 minute drive away and is well sign posted. The house is situated in the wine producing area of Touraine where you are welcome to stop off and sample the local wines at the many local vineyards, at the house we have an extensive list of brochures from the various vineyards. We can also advise you on vineyards we consider well worth visiting.
We had a lovely stay at Les Amis – the cottage is clean, comfortable, spacious and well equipped. It is great having sole use of the pool which is well maintained and a good size. The cottage is perfectly situated for walking/biking round the local area and for visiting some of the key visitor attractions of the Loire/Cher valleys. It was lovely to be able to see red squirrels from the window and deer, kingfishers and herons etc when we went out exploring. Our hosts were welcoming and informative – but unobtrusive – with good recommendations on the local area. There is easy access to the train at Gievres for trips to Orleans, Tours and Bourges if you want a day off driving – as we did. It was possible to cycle to the bakery in nearby Varennes and the tourist information in Chabris was helpful. It was also convenient to have the new SuperU just down the road in Chabris, with a only a relatively short drive to Valencay, Selles sur Cher or Romorantin for more touristy type places. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday; thank you very much to our hosts Pauline and Graham! Sue and Brendon, September 2019 (via Holiday France Direct)
